Rare images of German East Africa taken between July 1888 and April 1889. Divided into four sections: 39 photographs of Zanzibar, 15 photographs of Bagamoyo (including no.5a), 12 photographs of Dar-es-Salaam and 17 photographs of ‘activity of our warships’. Plate no.1 in the fourth part of the work (showing the ship “Leipzig”) was not issued as the plate list refers the reader to plate 14 in part one which shows the same subject. Sturtz and Wangemann were officers in the German navy, respectively a paymaster and padre. The plates were made by J. Sturtz during his service with the navy in East Africa and show various aspects of colonial life in German East Africa. Wangemann wrote the text. [Not listed in COPAC, OCLC lists three copies.]
